Vision Components at SPIE Photonics West: MIPI Vision Components for RPi5 with Hailo TPU

Vision Components presents an expanded portfolio of its MIPI vision components at SPIE Photonics West, which takes place from January 27 to February 1, 2025 in San Francisco.

Vision Components at SPIE Photonics West: MIPI Vision Components for RPi5 with Hailo TPU
Vision Components presents an AI demo with VC MIPI Cameras, Raspberry Pi 5 and Hailo TPU HAT at Photonics West.

For the first time, a demo will show the full support of the VC MIPI Cameras with the new Raspberry Pi 5 including Hailo TPU HAT. Embedded vision applications with and without AI can be implemented quickly and easily, using all VC MIPI Cameras and the RPi processor board. Also new: a micro-coax cable option for VC MIPI Camera Modules and the announcement of a MIPI CSI-2 camera series with integrated data pre-processing.

VC MIPI Camera Modules are compatible with all common processor platforms. The German manufacturer provides the corresponding drivers free of charge. VC has now also developed drivers for the latest Raspberry Pi 5, with which the camera portfolio with over 50 image sensors is directly supported. The drivers also enable image processing using the Hailo TPU HAT module and thus the use of AI-based algorithms for image processing.

Micro-coax for cable lengths of up to 75 cm
Another new feature is a micro-coax option as an alternative to the VC MIPI FPC cables, which allows the VC MIPI Cameras to be integrated flexibly and with a cable length of up to 75 cm. FPC cables are limited to a length of around 20 cm. The specially shielded VC Coax Cable uses an I-PEX connector. For the processor side, VC has developed an ultra-compact adapter, with which the cable can be connected via the integrated MIPI CSI-2 interface to common processor boards. For even longer cable connections of up to 10 meters, the VC MIPI Cameras are also available with an GMSL2 option.

Announcement: VC MIPI Cameras with integrated pre-processing
For the first time ever, VC is announcing a MIPI camera series at Photonics West, that has a programmable processing unit for image pre-processing integrated into the design of the tiny camera modules. It was developed for applications such as the detection and reading of barcodes and other markers and complements the portfolio of VC Power SoM FPGA accelerators. Vision Components is also presenting a new version of the VC Power SoM add-on board for FPGA-based data pre-processing at the trade fair, which offers a lower performance of approx. 60,000 logic cells compared to the existing module. It was developed in response to the great demand for an even more cost-effective version of the VC Power SoM and is available immediately.
