IVECO and Carrier Transicold Team Up to Offer a 100 Per Cent CNG-powered Solution for Refrigerated Trucks

Customers in France can now experience the performance, efficiency and environmental benefits of a completely compressed natural gas (CNG)-powered solution for refrigerated trucks during field tests of IVECO's first Stralis NP refrigerated truck equipped with the Carrier Transicold’s Supra® CNG refrigeration unit.

The truck will be on display at the SITL tradeshow, Porte de Versailles, France March 26- 28 in IVECO’s stand in Hall 1 - L8. Carrier Transicold is a part of Carrier, a leading global provider of innovative heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), refrigeration, fire, security and building automation technologies. IVECO is a brand of CNH Industrial N.V., a world leader in capital goods listed on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE: CNHI) and on the Mercato Telematico Azionario of the Borsa Italiana (MI: CNHI).

“The collaboration with IVECO began two years ago with a simple goal - to provide a complete sustainable solution to transport operators that are facing urban distribution challenges related to emission regulations,” said Bertrand Gueguen, president, Truck / Trailer International, Carrier Transicold. “We have worked closely with IVECO to build a high performance and sustainable solution that is 100 per cent CNG–powered, which significantly reduces emissions.”

Developed for use with rigid trucks, the Supra CNG unit uses one source of CNG fuel from a single refill point on the vehicle, which feeds independent tanks connected to the truck’s engine and the refrigeration unit. This configuration ensures the Supra CNG unit can maintain cold chain integrity, allowing for full autonomy of the refrigeration system even when the truck is idling or stopped – and making the refuelling process faster and more efficient for the operator.

The sustainable, total truck CNG solution helps to significantly reduce emissions while increasing operational efficiencies as compared to current generation diesel engines, and are compliant with the EU-ECE R110 regulation*:

  • Reduction of particulate emissions: up to 95 per cent for the Supra CNG** / up to 99 per cent for the Stralis NP truck engine***
  • Reduction of NOx: up to 70 per cent for the Supra CNG / up to 32 per cent for the Stralis NP truck engine
  • Reduction of CO2 emissions: up to 20 per cent for the Supra CNG / up to 95 per cent for the Stralis NP truck engine

“As CNG-powered commercial vehicles grow in popularity across Europe for urban distribution, we are pleased to offer our customers a way to embrace this alternative fuel in their refrigeration units as well,” added Gueguen. “This is another successful step toward more sustainable transport solutions.”

Noise reduction is particularly important for truck deliveries in high density urban areas in the morning or late at night, as more municipalities across Europe enact noise ordinances. IVECO’s Stralis NP truck is a PIEK-compliant quiet truck, offering a dB(A) rating below 71, and Carrier Transicold’s Supra CNG is PIEK-compliant with a dB(A) below 60.

Carrier Transicold and IVECO first teamed up to present their sustainable and alternative energy solutions using CNG at the 2018 IAA Commercial Vehicle show.
