Safety-critical edge AI platform integration for industrial applications

At Hannover Messe, QNX, a division of BlackBerry Limited, announced an expanded partnership with NVIDIA to integrate QNX® OS for Safety 8.0 with the NVIDIA IGX Thor platform. This technical alignment combines a deterministic microkernel real-time operating system (RTOS) with a functional safety stack, allowing developers to deploy next-generation edge AI in regulated environments such as surgical robotics, autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), and industrial automation.

Unified Architecture for Mixed-Criticality Systems
The integration addresses the complex requirement of hosting both safety-critical controls and high-performance AI workloads on a single hardware platform. By utilizing the NVIDIA IGX Thor Halos Safety Stack alongside QNX OS for Safety 8.0, engineers can consolidate system architectures through a mixed-criticality approach. This allows AI-driven functions—including perception, spatial planning, and decision-making—to run on NVIDIA’s accelerated compute cores while vital safety functions remain isolated and deterministic within the QNX microkernel.

Technical Reliability and Certification Standards
For industries such as medical technology and heavy industrial manufacturing, functional safety and reliability are mandatory parameters rather than secondary features. The combined platform supports the rigorous certification processes required for regulated equipment. The microkernel architecture of QNX provides a trusted foundation that prevents low-priority processes from interfering with high-priority safety tasks. This structural isolation is critical for maintaining system integrity in software-defined machines where autonomous behavior is managed at the edge.

Cross-Industry Technology Transfer from Automotive
This collaboration scales the proven safety architecture previously established with the NVIDIA DRIVE AGX Thor development kit. By extending these capabilities from the automotive data ecosystem into the broader industrial and medical sectors, QNX and NVIDIA are standardizing the way intelligent, regulated systems are built. This ensures that the same levels of determinism and functional safety found in autonomous vehicles are applied to the next wave of smart factory components and digital supply chain robotics.

Development Scalability and Early Access
The unified platform is engineered to support the entire product lifecycle, from early-stage prototyping to full-scale production deployment. This consistency in software architecture reduces development overhead and accelerates time-to-market for complex AI systems. To facilitate this transition, Early Access registration is currently open for the NVIDIA IGX Thor Developer Kit with QNX, providing select customers with the technical tools necessary to build and verify safety-critical applications in high-demand edge environments.
