NORD DRIVESYSTEMS
supports airports in designing energy-efficient baggage handling systems with the NORD ECO Service. The primary goal of the service is to reveal savings potential in applications to optimize energy consumption, lower CO2 emissions, and provide cost savings. NORD’s extensive knowledge and experience in producing drive system solutions for more than 100 industries enables them to develop better drives for targeted application optimization. With the ECO Service, the drive specialist has already helped many companies improve their system’s performance and energy efficiency through modernization while simultaneously reducing system variants.
The NORD ECO Service is designed to optimize existing installations to find the best drive solution for the system. The NORD ECO BOX is installed between the drive and power supply and takes measurements over a period of at least two weeks, recording real-time data on permanent loads, load peaks, and irregular conditions. This long data capture period results in greater data density, reveals patterns as well as anomalies, and generates a load cycle for the entire system. Within the ECO BOX itself, an energy measuring device tracks current and voltage, determining the actual energy consumption and calculating the proportional power factor.
After the data collection is complete, NORD evaluates the information, breaking down the consumption, utilization, and total cost of ownership (TCO) values and finding opportunities for optimization. Oversizing is one of the most common points found in the process leading to inefficiency. Once these inefficiencies are identified, NORD proposes a new solution better suited for the application with lower energy consumption, costs, and CO2 emissions. The installation of an alternative system is then followed by a comparative measurement with a final analysis revealing the savings potential.
At an airport that was already using an energy-efficient drive system with an IE3 motor, the NORD ECO Service concluded that significant energy could be saved by switching to a DuoDrive integrated gear unit and IE5+ motor with a decentralized NORDAC LINK variable frequency drive. After a comparative measurement of both systems over a period of a little more than a year, the new system resulted in a savings potential of 590 kWh and 396 kg CO2.
Airports that use a DuoDrive solution with an IE5+ motor in their baggage handling systems instead of IE1 motors, can achieve a savings potential of up to 48%, reducing the application’s annual CO2 emissions by up to 144 kg. The DuoDrive’s low operating temperatures and the ability to reduce system variants make them additionally ideal for baggage handling systems.
The significant advantages of the NORD ECO Service increase when viewed over entire systems. Once an optimized drive solution is determined for an application, it can be applied throughout each drive in the system, effectively reducing system variants. Such a reduction in the number of variants can help to streamline production, logistics, storage, and service processes as well as administrative costs. Highly efficient motors, such as IE5+ synchronous motors, provide constant torque over a wide speed range even at partial loads and low speeds, and are particularly ideal for baggage handling systems.
