Tata Steel wins £1 million Northern Ireland contract

Rail from Tata Steel has helped get the railway line between Northern Ireland’s two biggest cities back on track – and resulted in a further £1 million order from the country’s public transport provider.

Rail track from Tata Steel, worth £2 million, went into upgrading a section of track on the Belfast to Derry-Londonderry line, which re-opened earlier this month after eight months of safety- and engineering-related upgrades. A further £1 million order has now been placed with Tata Steel.

“Our customer Translink, the Belfast-based public transport company, initially bought £2 million of rail from us last year,” said Account Manager Rail Sector Craig Woodward.

“We have received extremely positive feedback from Translink about the quality of the product and service that we supplied.”

As a result of the strong working partnership, Tata Steel was able to tender for the rail supply to re-rail sections of track in the central Belfast area and to replenish stock levels.

Just over half of the order is for the premium grade high performance rail - HPrail^® - which received full Network Rail approval in July 2012. HPrail addresses the issues of wear and rolling contact fatigue in track, reducing the frequency of rail grinding and its associated costs.

Craig continued: “We are delighted to have been selected as the preferred supplier for this project.

“It goes to show how developing close working relationships with our customers and proving our capabilities to them on a continuous basis is the best way of securing our future together.”
