RK timing belt linear units with safety locking system
The new version of the Machine Directive 2006/42/EC came into force on 29.12.2009. The new regulations are aimed primarily at manufacturers of automation technology, handling systems, integrated manufacturing systems and machine tools with particular focus on vertical linear axes which, until now, were braked but not stopped during maintenance work.
Until now it was common practice in production processes to simply hold the vertical axis in place using the brake of the drive motor. However, mechanical wear and tear and oil or grease deposits may cause the holding force of the brake to be exceeded. This could result in a lowering of the axis. The dismantling of a motor complete with brake during maintenance work could even cause the axis to drop completely. This is extremely hazardous to the life and limb of any persons in the vicinity of the danger zone. For this reason, the Machine Directive that came into force at the end of 2009 requires that any risk assessment must safely prevent the accidental lowering of the vertical axis.
In response to these new requirements, RK Rose+Krieger is now offering a "Safelock" option for its RK DuoLine linear unit range. When this option is selected, a locking element in the interior of the axis with emergency brake properties takes over the required safety locking function. When the axis is in normal mode a pressurised pneumatic unit ensures that the locking system is open. If there is a loss of pressure, such as when the machine is at a standstill, the spring of the mechanics is actuated and fixes the traverse carriage with a holding force of 1,500 N. This option is currently available for our linear unit 120x80-II and is entirely integrated in the interior of the unit. Options for linear units 80x80, 120x80 and 160 will be available soon.

This solution, which is currently unrivalled on the market, ensures that the entire technology of the locking system is hidden and largely protected from any negative external influences – there are also no protruding edges.
