Utility-Scale Battery Storage Integration in Regional Power Markets

East Point Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of Equinor, has commenced commercial operation of the Citrus Flatts energy storage project in Harlingen, Texas, operating in tandem with Danske Commodities to integrate merchant power balancing into regional transmission networks. The deployment addresses supply-demand imbalances in utility-scale renewable generation across the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) territory.

Cooperative Roles and Market Dispatch
Managing merchant battery assets requires real-time coordination between physical plant operations and power trading. East Point Energy serves as the project developer and independent power producer, managing the construction, operational availability, and physical infrastructure of the installations. Danske Commodities provides energy trading and algorithmic market dispatch, executing short-term position balancing, day-ahead bidding, and ancillary service management. This joint operating structure enables asset dispatch aligned with fluctuating wholesale price signals and grid demands.

Technical Specifications and Facility Operations
The Citrus Flatts installation is a 100 MW / 200 MWh utility-scale battery energy storage system. The facility utilizes two-hour duration electrochemical storage to absorb surplus generation from regional wind and solar generation and discharge up to 100 MW of power during peak load periods. It operates alongside the previously commissioned 10 MW / 20 MWh Sunset Ridge installation, bringing the coordinated operational capacity to 110 MW / 220 MWh.

Both systems connect directly into the ERCOT transmission system to deliver rapid-response ancillary services, including frequency response and ramping reserves.

Grid Balancing and Commercial Context
The growth of intermittent generation within the ERCOT grid causes rapid fluctuations in net load and system frequency. Battery storage mitigates transmission curtailment by charging during localized generation surges and discharging when dispatchable capacity tightens.

Christian Lie Hansen, Equinor vice president of onshore renewables Americas and chair of the East Point Energy board, stated: "The start-up of these facilities underscores Equinor’s ambition to grow its integrated power business, delivering flexible and reliable energy solutions in attractive power markets."

Andrew Foukal, CEO of East Point Energy, stated: "This project will generate millions in tax revenue to support local priorities. As energy demand surges across Texas, it will strengthen the electrical grid and help keep energy costs affordable for families and businesses."

The coordinated operational model established in ERCOT provides the framework for Equinor's ongoing expansion into the PJM Interconnection, where an 80 MW / 160 MWh portfolio across four projects in Virginia is scheduled for commercial operation in early 2027.
