Makino targets improved performance and productivity by enhancing EDM portfolio
Industries: Die & mould, Electronics, Food and packaging, Health and cosmetics, Precision metalworking, High-end stamping Applications: Wire and sinker EDM
Image 1: Front view of Makino UP6• Greatly improved performance and productivity thanks to completely new UP6 wire-EDM, enhanced CAM software and upgraded EDAF machines
• The new and innovative UP6 wire-EDM enables best accu-racies at the part . It also features a new wire drive and a new wire threading system
• The EDAF series facelift consists of a newly developed genera-tor, the first implementation of H.E.A.T. technology for sinker-EDM and a programmable flushing control.
Speaking at the launch of the new wire EDM UP6 Makino CEO Dr. P. Anders Ingemarsson said, “The upgrades and extensions to our EDM portfolio have considerably improved their appeal to machining companies targeting a wide range of industries. The improved performance parameters speak for themselves, while the machine’s enhanced user-friendliness can boost a company’s productivity by flattening the operator learning curve”.
New wire EDM UP6
Featuring a hollow casting, parts of the new Makino UP6 is flushed through with dielectric water at constant temperature to prevent the machine suffering from heat displacement thus maintaining the high standards associated with Makino products.
The arm seal plate is cleaned constantly by a water curtain to reduce friction and ensure smooth operation of the X-axis.
Extra-long high precision roller slides reduce motion vibrations and improve rigidity. High precision ball screws are fully covered to prevent dirt ingress and extend their lifespan.
The Makino UP6 has a newly developed wire drive system giving better corner accuracy, even more reliable wire threading in complicated shapes and small start holes ensuring smooth and stable machining.
A new automatic wire threading system was developed to enhance the threading capabilities and works both, dry and with water jet
Enhancing CAM software: EDCAM 2017
Makino’s new sinker EDM CAM software EDCAM 2017 has a lot to offer operators. Many tasks are now conducted automatically: creating and adding cavities from a 3D model, ascertaining all electrode positions, recognising and calculating the spark area, recognising and acquiring depths, finding measuring points and recognising workpieces. The critical overall benefit is a minimization of input errors. EDCAM 2017 continues to set the standards for operator-friendliness with new features for Hyper i Control, while keeping the same NC program on EDCAM and Makino EDM machines. In addition, the EDCAM data are editable at the machine control interface and machine settings can be automatically downloaded.
EDAF Facelift: More than just a makeover
The tried-and-tested Makino EDAF series has been given an extensive facelift. It not only comes in a new design but also gives users the benefits of Makino’s popular H.E.A.T. technology, available until now in the U series wire EDM ma-chines. The new EDAF comes with improved feed rates up to 5,000 mm/min in the X- and Y-axes. Another feature, HS-Rib, gives the Z-axis a jump speed of 20m/min, a 31% increase over the current model. The newly developed H.E.A.T. generator is more powerful (up from 40A to 80A peak current in standard, reducing power consumption by 44%. Operators now benefit from programmable flushing pressure, fine flow rate adjustment, an inverter controlled pump and an accurate pressure-gauge. All in all, the EDAF facelift adds up to a significant upgrade in performance and usability.
Easy operation
Makino's new-generation Hyper i Control is easier and faster to use irrespective of operator experience. The new Hyper i Control operating panel features smartphone-/tablet-style flick, pan, pinch, spread and swipe functionality. Opera-tors will welcome the fact that that the touchscreen panel can be set to the most convenient operating height. In addition, the large access door simplifies work-piece loading/unloading considerably. As Makino CEO Ingemarsson adds, “these are all features that can help boost productivity in everyday EDM opera-tions.”
