Low-maintenance drives for food processing

Bargteheide – At the Anuga FoodTec exhibition in Cologne, Germany, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS will present distributed drive concepts that meet the typical demands of the food industry. Variable-speed drives with IP66/IP69K ingress protection are suitable for processes that require regular cleaning with high-pressure steam jets. All components are manufactured in-house: gearboxes, smooth-surface motors, and frequency inverters. The nsd tupH anti-corrosion treatment gives the aluminum housings a smooth and durable surface. Even blows and scratches do not impair the corrosion resistance. Since no coating is applied but the surface itself is hardened, there can be no pollution of products or process media as for instance with chipping paint. The nsd tupH treatment is approved for food applications according to FDA Title 21 CFR 175.300. Trade show visitors will be able to see nsd tupH drives that have performed in a salty atmosphere for one year and were removed for demonstration purposes. In contrast to painted drives, these units have not corroded. Due to their superior resilience, nsd tupH drives require minimal maintenance and have a long service life. The comprehensive NORD gearbox program enables drive configurations exactly tailored to the particular demand while at the same time supporting an easy variant management.

Smart standard drives provide servo dynamics and precision

Bargteheide – Teamed with advanced inverter electronics for smart control functionality, standard asynchronous motors providing IE2 or IE3 efficiency and permanent-magnet IE4 synchronous motors can deliver servo-level dynamics and agility. Based on state-of-the-art frequency inverters for motor-mounting, wall-mounting, or cabinet installation, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS implement highly precise positioning tasks, safety applications, and sophisticated functions such as synchronization, coordinated multi-axis operation, winding control, and flying shear.

Robust drive systems show their sweet side

Many steps are necessary to make chocolate from cocoa beans. During this process, ingredients and mixtures in various states remain in near-continuous motion for hours and days on end, which requires reliable drive systems. In Zotter Schokoladen’s factory in Southeast Austria, the durability and fail-safe operation of these drives is doubly significant: firstly, smooth operation ensures top quality of the final product. Secondly, the production line is always open to thousands of visitors who should of course not witness any malfunctions. For years now, the facility has been using geared motors from NORD DRIVESYSTEMS for conveying, mixing and pumping tasks.

Taken to new heights: Industrial gear units from NORD complete heavy workload at a reservoir project

Bargteheide – Swiss energy supplier Axpo is close to finishing the demanding large-scale “Linthal 2015” construction project: Switzerland’s largest hydroelectric undertaking will increase the overall output of the existing Linth-Limmern power plants from 480 MW to 1,480 MW. A new underground pumping station was created to pump water from the Limmernboden reservoir at an altitude of 1,860 m above sea level into the Muttsee lake about 600 m higher up. This elevation difference will be used to produce hydroelectric power on demand. The heart of the project in particular – the underground center for the new pumped storage hydroelectric power station – required gigantic efforts. At an extreme incline of 45 degrees and a height difference of approximately 180 m, conveyor systems in a sub-station transported 500 t of excavated material per hour, around the clock. On a second conveyor belt, the crushed material was transported up to the gravel plant where it was stored or processed for further use. For a total of three years, these conveyors were driven by NORD industrial gear units and transported approximately one million tons of material.
